A colleague of ours once said that with certain pieces, there comes a point where they surpass the identifiers of vintage or antique and are simply referred to as relics.
This exquisite silk dress certainly fits that description with intricate beadwork and an attached sash!
The epitome of 1920s flapper fashion, this extraordinary garment is a significant and wearable piece of history.
Aside from its gleaming beauty, this dress represents freedom from the firm, constrictive expectations placed on the female silhouette. The abandonment of corsets and constraining garments in favour of loose fits that offered movement and the opportunity to flaunt the arms and ankles. This carefree nature quickly influenced and altered the way garments were being made. More expressive clothing was now desired and ornate details like flowers, glass beads, sequins, rhinestones and even fur became an increasingly popular aspect of design.
This dress showcases not only this transformation in women’s fashion but the incredible, labour intensive skills utilized in making these mesmerizing and unique, jazz era showstoppers.
Just look at that beadwork!
Nearing 100 years in age this piece is in remarkable condition and very strong.
Very minimal wear including a couple tiny pinholes and stress to the seams at the waist and sash beading. Black undergarments will hide the tiny holes.
As we all face the restrictions in todays world, we need to remember that things will one day change for the better and hopefully this magnificent beauty will be danced in once again - perhaps even the Charleston!
